When You Feel Stuck And Don’t Know Where To Begin

If you’re feeling stuck and don’t know how to get back on track, you’re not alone. Whether you want to overcome something big or small, the emotions that arise are usually the same: Fear, confusion, frustration, and self-doubt.

The biggest question that usually looms over people’s heads is this: “Where do I begin?”

It’s been a long time since I’ve written a blog post. There have been many moments where I’ve wanted to start, but for some reason, the words just wouldn’t come out.

Is it ironic that I was stuck? Here I am, helping others figure out how to get “unstuck” with major life decisions and I can’t even overcome writer’s block?

Well, I always say… The way we do small things is the way we do big things. So by that logic, I could apply what I’d do to overcome big decisions to anything – even writer’s block – right?

Right.

The truth is, I didn’t want to get unstuck – at least not until now – because if I did, I would’ve figured it out. How do I know this? Well, because that’s how it works. I’ve been shown this repeatedly in my own life and repeatedly with the clients I work with: If you don’t have the motivation to truly overcome something, chances are you’ll remain an immovable object.

So… Great – I have the motivation to get unstuck: But now what?

That looming question of “Where do I begin” can cause a whole new layer of fear and “stuck-ness.” To continue with my own example of writer’s block, here are {some of} the fears that came up every time I went to get started:

  1. What if nobody wants to read my content anymore?
  2. What if people unsubscribe from my email list since they haven’t heard from me in a while?
  3. What if I get it wrong?

And that’s where I stopped myself. Get it wrong? What does that even mean? Is there really a “right” in the world of blogging? Well, some would argue yes – but I just say whatever to those “blogging guru’s.”

In blogging and in life, there really isn’t a “wrong” way to travel along your path. Just do you – if your intentions are genuine and you put in the work, life just works out.

This is MY blog: I decide what’s right – and what to write!

And this is YOUR life: You decide what’s right – and what YOU want to write.

Regarding those other fears about unsubscribes? To those fears, I respond: So what?

It’s true: People will come and go. People will unsubscribe. But nobody will die. It’s just a blog people. We’ll all live. All of this fear-nonsense is so distracting and definitely causes a lot of unnecessary “stuckness.” It’s amazing how we can get so caught up in our heads that we quickly lose perspective.

So back to the original question, “Where do I begin?” and the action steps I actually took to get started:

  1. Begin somewhere. Anywhere. It honestly doesn’t matter. Just start and build from there. You can always pivot along the way. Life is a process – let it unfold.
  2. Take things one step at a time. Once you start, just keep going. If you think too many steps ahead, you’re setting yourself up to feel overwhelmed.
  3. Don’t get caught up in the logistics. Decide you want to start and figure out the rest along the way.
  4. Remember the bigger picture and trust. Whatever is meant to be, will be. Just put your head down and be honest with your intentions. Do the work and trust that life will work out as it should.
  5. If you’re going to start working towards something, be all in. If you’re not all in, you might as well be all out. Why half-ass life?
